Things I love About Romantic Suspense Heroes AKA Why I Love Writing Men
Authors talk all the time about what they like writing most – the heroine’s journey, love scenes, the dark moment, etc. I like writing dudes. It’s that simple. There is something about the way they talk to each other – the guy banter/Band Of Brothers feel – that gets me every time. In my experience, men talk differently when they talk to each other from how they talk when they talk to the women in their lives. That is so much fun to explore and get on the page. And then there’s the ultimate joy of writing a big, tough, sometimes damaged alpha guy and showing his soft gooey center as he falls for the right woman. ~Swoon~
I have some all-time favorite romances, many of which start with this guy who is a teeny bit difficult but turns out to be this amazing hero. Here are a few examples:
Gray Rouillard in Linda Howard’s AFTER THE NIGHT. I can’t think about this guy without getting all melty. He is awful when you first meet him. Really, not a great first impression. If you’ve only read the first few pages…keep reading! Turns out he is hot and decent and tough and a rescuer by nature even though he fights it. Honestly, I could re-read this book a hundred times and still love him.
Gideon (otherwise known as The Beast of Blackthorne Hall) in Amada Quick’s RAVISHED. I tend to read contemporaries and romantic suspense, but this guy won me over. This was one of the first historical romances I ever read. It has a smart, studious heroine and a flawed hero with a rough gossip-filled past. I laughed over their antics and loved it. Watching the heroine win him over was pure joy.
Lucky Doucet in LUCKY’S LADY by Tami Hoag. This is set in the Bayou. Lucky is the rough-and-tumble type and he breaks into Cajun French every now and then. Need I say more?
Alex Markov in KISS AN ANGEL by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I know this is not everyone’s favorite SEP book but it is mine. She manages to combine a circus, a virginal heroine, Russian royalty and a tiger. Did you see where I said circus? I mean, really, who else could do that but SEP? There is a scene near the end where the hero gets on his knees…it was amazing.
If you’ve read these books you likely see a pattern in my reading. That’s reflected in my writing as well. Tough guys who are pretty great when you chip away and get to who they really are. Ward in RUNNING HOT is like that. I hope you give him a try. To entice you, here’s one of his first thoughts about the heroine:
She stood eight feet away, outside of kicking distance, and didn’t move. No telltale signs of nerves. She didn’t shift her weight or her gaze. She looked at him as if she could kick his ass and was just seconds away from starting. For some reason, Ward found that sexy as hell.
You have to love that in a hero.
Las cosas que me gusta de los Héroes de Suspenso y románticos la razon por la cual amo escribir de chicos
Autores hablan todo el tiempo sobre lo que les gusta escribir más - el viaje de la heroína, escenas de amor, el momento oscuro, etc. Me gusta escribir tíos. Es así de simple. Hay algo acerca de la forma en que hablan el uno al otro - las bromas chico / Band Of Brothers sentir - que me pone cada vez. Gedeón (también conocido como La Bestia de Blackthorne Hall) en Ravished de Amada rápida. Tiendo a leer contemporáneos y suspense romántico, pero este tipo me conquistó. Esta fue una de las primeras novelas históricas que he leído. Tiene una heroína estudioso inteligente y un héroe imperfecto con un áspero pasado chismes lleno. Me reí de sus travesuras y me encantó. Viendo la heroína ganárselo era pura alegría.

Si usted ha leído estos libros es probable ver un patrón en mi lectura. Eso se refleja en mi escritura también. Los tipos duros que son bastante grandes cuando usted saltar lejos y llegar a lo que realmente son. Ward en caliente es así. Espero que le des una oportunidad. Para atraer a usted, aquí está uno de sus primeros pensamientos sobre la heroína:
Se puso de pie ocho metros de distancia, fuera de patear la distancia, y no se movió. No hay signos reveladores de nervios. Ella no cambió su peso o su mirada. Ella lo miró como si ella podría patearle el culo y estaba a unos segundos de arranque. Por alguna razón, la sala encontró que sexy.
